Next Weekend at Cerulean

Come and join us this coming weekend for two wonderful events including our 1st Annual Studio Sale on Friday, October 29th from 5 - 8 PM and Saturday, October 30th from 11-3 featuring Cerulean's artist-in-residence Janna Civittolo & Hélène Farrar.  Also, come and see the last days of "Patterns & Permutations" a trio group show of works by Bill Duffy, Judith Krischik, and Kate Buehner - and at 3PM we'll serve some hot coffee and hear how the artists approached these works.

The Cerulean Collective has been hard at work creating pieces for our next show, "Geography For 300." Art from and inspired by National Geographic magazine. The show will start September 2 with an artist reception on Friday, Sept. 3 from 5-8pm and will run through Sept. 7th.

Annual Holiday Sale continued

We will be continuing our annual holiday sale until Christmas day, December 25th. We will be open this Friday, December 17th until 7pm. There are still many handmade, locally created, wonderful, original, art creations for your holiday gift giving! Additionally, we have gift certificates available to be used toward workshops, private lessons, and art purchases. Give the gift of art this year! It is truly a one-of-a-kind experience!

Local Art Students Come to Cerulean for Artist Talk

Artist Christine J. Higgins spoke with local high school art club about her exhibition "From the Studio: Paper & Prints"last week at Cerulean. Students were encouraged to take a closer look at the works and at the actual papermaking process itself. Students also took a tour of Cerulean...and enjoyed our view of the river!

October 2009 Exhibit, Works of Christine Higgins

Cerulean Fine Art Gallery at 202 Water Street in Hallowell announces a solo exhibit entitled “From the Studio: Paper and Print”, featuring the works of Readfield artist, Christine Higgins. An artist’s reception will take place Friday, October 9^th from 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm The show runs through November 7th. The reception is free and open to the public. Christine Higgins, a former Cony High School Art Teacher, has extensive training and passion for paper-making and paper. “She considers the surface and fibers of the paper to be equally significant as her imagery.”, states Janna Civittolo, proprietor and artist. Her work references nature and her connection with it. Higgins speaks that “this exhibit continues my interest in the color, texture, and light of the natural environment...Each paper comes from the original fibers of mulberry, abaca or cotton which are then soaked, beaten, pigmented, and drained onto screens.”

Cerulean is delighted to bring to central Maine the opportunity to see a local papermaker's work. Proprietor and artist, Hélène Farrar says, “Christine's print and paperworks are delicate and organic. We are very happy to share them as there is a great need in Maine to see and learn this process which is part of our local heritage.”

"A Gathering of Materials"

Opening Artist Reception will be Friday, September 11th from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Cerulean. This exhibit will feature the works of Hallowell (and Roslindale, MA) sculptor Ellen Gibson. The show runs through October 2. Additionally, Gibson will be giving an artist talk on Saturday, September 26th from 3:00 to 4:00 pm. All events are free to the public. Please come an enjoy great art by local artist, and good snacks!

Gibson's work is comprised of her personal collections of found objects and her manipulations and taming of metal and wood. She states that “materials tell a narrative through their feel, weight, patina, history or former use.” Her solo exhibition at Cerulean focuses on two concepts: balance and containment. Gibson will display a series of “pocket books” to which she references, “the junk that we carry around with us for whatever reason.” Additionally, she will be exhibiting a series of works which she states that “deal with balance between weights, decisions, scale or visual assumptions. This being in reference to the contradictions and choices that confront our daily lives.”

Hubcap Heaven is Here next Friday, September 4th

Here's some words from our fearless Hubcap Leader, Barbara Loken
For the past four summers, while driving back and forth to a boys camp
that I work at in the summer in Wayne, I daily drove past a small white
house on Highway 133 surrounded by piles of hubcaps. When the camp
needed decorations for a coffee house evening, I suggested hubcaps and
in no time I was introducing myself to Margaret Hawes who runs A and M
Wheel Covers with her husband Arthur. Margaret kindly showed me a pile
of slightly dinged wheel covers,( the correct name for what is commonly
called HUB CAPS) and I was awestruck by the hundreds of ways a circle
can be designed to suggest speed, wealth, economy, practicality, or
beauty. My first forty hubcaps were scrubbed by the boys with the Dawn
detergent that Margaret suggested , enhanced when necessary with spray
paint, and proved to be spectacular on the theater buildings walls. One
small lad immediately saw a connection and quipped, “ Coffee and
Cars, they both keep you running all day long.” which became the
theme of the coffee house.
This spring Bill Duffy and I visited Margaret who again helped us pick
out another batch from the scrap cap pile for the Cerulean artists. A
Hub Cap has a history and evokes nostalgia for the cars that we have
owned or loved or coveted or is just cool to look at and enjoy. Each
artist was challenged to transform a Hub Cap or two into a work of art.
We hope you enjoy the show in present time and are also reminded
fondly of a car that carries special memories. Anyone ever own a ’57
Chevy boat-car with fins?
No one has taken me up on the idea of a Hub Cap rhythm band, maybe
next year.
